Wireless-Signal-Based Vehicle Counting and Classification in Different Road Environments

Traffic monitoring is key to modern city planning. However, the costs associated with devices limit large-scale deployment of existing traffic systems. In this article, we propose and evaluate an algorithm automatically count number vehicles that have passed through a low-cost system for monitoring. The uses deviations in Wi-Fi signals strength predict presence vehicle on road its type (car, bus). study further systematically compares six analytical techniques classification detected vehicles. methods were tested data from three scenarios Münster, Germany. Vehicle accuracy ranged 83% up 100% our study. We also observed higher frequency (5 GHz) was superior 2.4 GHz improving overall detection results algorithms. suggest Wi-Fi-based proposed are promising cost-efficient cities privacy-preserving manner.
